You are on the "EAST COAST ENGLAND" page.
For many sailors The East Coast from England is one of the first large sailing trips.
It is exciting to leave IJmuiden or Scheveningen and set a westerly course to sail to England.
You sail overnight at sea with no landfall. The next day you will approach Lowestoft or Harwich, and after just having a nap go out for exploring.
Lowestoft has a famous yacht club in typical English style and it is a nice city to stroll through. The surroundings are attractive for a long walk or sightseeing by bus. |
Harwich is a lot busier with shiptraffic. You will have to follow a separate procedure for sail up the Orwell river. Harwich does not offer mooring facilities for yachts, but the River Orwell offers many possibilities. |
 |
Pinmill with the famous Butt and Oyster pub, where you can drink a great English beer on the terrace or later can eat, is well known.
A walk along the banks of the river takes you through beautiful countryside.
In Ipswich, you're right in the city comfortably in the Marina.
Ipswich and the surroundings are well worth a visit. |
Between Lowestoft and Harwich are the River Ore and the Deben River.
Both rivers can be navigated.
On the River Deben you will find halfway a good sandy beach where you can go to anchor.
At the end of the river lies the picturesque town of Woodbridge. This town has a marina where you can enter at high tide.
Woodbridge is a very typical town and well worth a visit. |
To the south, past Harwich, you get into Thames estuary, with many sandbars and shallows.
It requires precise navigation, but it's a nice area.
I myself was once in Brightlingsea and that was a nice city, with a beautiful environment. |
A visit to London is obviously unique.
In advance, call the St. Katherine Dock marina because it´s busy here and if you have sailed all the way and you cannot go in, that´s disappointing.
You are with your boat in the center of London and that is beautiful. Well pricey, but oh well .... then you have some.
Still further south you´ll find Ramsgate.
This town is frequently visited by many sailors from Zeeland and Belgium
Further South is described on the page, England - South Coast. |
